Hubei University Laboratory Transforms Waste Tires into Aerogels: Innovation Drives Circular Economy Development

Facing the increasing output of waste tires and the problem of resource waste, the research on sustainable development and green recycling technologies has become a hot topic. The Device Performance Characterization Laboratory of Hubei University has actively explored this issue. On April 19, the reporter visited the laboratory and saw project members conducting experiments on rubber powder modification. Zhang Chenyang, a student in the laboratory, introduced that the team is committed to turning waste tires into treasures and achieving a green transformation. The research mainly uses hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and polyether (F127) to modify the rubber powder, changing its hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity for subsequent chemical synthesis. The oxidant H₂O₂ turns into water after the reaction, reducing pollution in the preparation process of rubber aerogels. The researchers also demonstrated the key equipment for preparing rubber aerogels - a vacuum freeze-drying device - and explained its working principle. Team members use a ball mill to make the particle size of the rubber powder uniform. After two years of laboratory research and development, the project team has successfully designed a new method to modify the dispersibility of rubber powder. Then, it is mixed with cross-linking agents and dispersants to prepare rubber aerogels. The aerogels prepared from waste tire rubber powder exhibit excellent compressibility, heat insulation, and hydrophobicity. Wan Li, the project supervisor, said that improving the original waste tire recycling technology and producing high-value-added economic products are important ways to comprehensively promote and implement the green, ecological, low-carbon, energy-saving, and environmental protection efficiency enhancement development of enterprises. In the future, the team will continue to optimize process parameters, improve the performance of the prepared rubber aerogels, and explore large-scale production technologies. This technology has been recognized by the industry during the implementation process. Wang Jingchao, the deputy general manager and senior engineer of Dongfeng Hongtai, believes that "the efficient conversion of waste tire rubber powder into aerogel materials avoids the secondary pollution to the environment caused by traditional incineration or landfill treatment methods. At the same time, this technology realizes the effective utilization of resources, transforms originally difficult-to-handle waste into functional products, and promotes the development of the circular economy." Due to its low density, low thermal conductivity, and good mechanical properties, rubber aerogels can be applied in fields such as thermal management and safety protection of new energy vehicle batteries, insulation of high-temperature oil and gas pipelines, and building insulation materials. It is understood that this research provides an innovative solution for waste tire recycling, explores a new "harmless" circular utilization path, and strives to turn "black pollution" into "black gold."
