In recent years, high-refractive-index silicone oil has gained significant attention across multiple fields due to its unique properties, with continuous innovations in related technologies and products.
Wacker Chemie Group launched new encapsulants, LUMISIL® 590 and LUMISIL® 591, designed for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and optical components. These high-refractive-index silicones, made from highly transparent elastomers with a refractive index of 1.53, can withstand high operating temperatures and intense light radiation without yellowing. They effectively protect LED chips, significantly extending their service life while enhancing LED luminous efficiency.
At the 2025 Brazil International Cosmetics Ingredients Exhibition, Wacker introduced BELSIL® PF 200, a new phenyl silicone oil. Boasting a high refractive index, it is ideal for water-based formulations, leaving hair silky smooth. Its water-dispersible nature simplifies the preparation of microemulsions, making it perfect for water-based products like shampoos and conditioners.
In terms of patents, Guangdong Zhenchengda New Materials Co., Ltd. filed a patent in March 2025 for "a high-refractive-index transparent photocurable mercaptoaryl silicone oil, its preparation, and applications." Produced via hydrolysis-polycondensation, this silicone oil contains aryl groups and photocurable mercapto groups, enabling rapid UV curing and excellent stability. It shows broad potential in aerospace, electronics, optical materials, and 3D printing.
Additionally, patents for LED encapsulant materials by Guangzhou Huaxinke Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd. utilize specific silicone oils to achieve high refractive index and light transmittance. Liaoning Xinbang New Materials Co., Ltd.’s patent for branched methylphenyl silicone oil features an optimal refractive index, finding wide use in optical materials and electronics. These advancements are driving high-refractive-index silicone oil to play an increasingly vital role across diverse industries.
